The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention
- Oscar Wilde
The idea of Sukhalay was conceptualized when Smt. Manibai Kantilal Shah met Shri Tilakchand K Lodaya during one of his visits to his hometown Gadag. Smt Manibai K Shah expressed her desire to donate an amount of INR 3,00,000/- for a cause which is beneficial in any manner.
This meeting led Shri Tilakchand K Lodaya to think exhaustively over how the money can be utilized in a way that would benefit the community at large. The elders of Gadag led by Shri Tilakchand K Lodaya and Smt. Manibai Kantilal Shah had a few rounds of meetings to understand the operational feasibility of a few ideas suggested.
After much deliberation, he zeroed in on building a home for the senior citizens in and around Gadag. The idea was accepted and approved by the donor. The land was purchased at a location in Gadag which is easily accessible to all. Er. Shri Gulab Mulji Sonawala designed the building plans free of cost.
The clichéd adage - “When you want something the whole universe conspires you to achieve it.” was proven true. The good samaritans of the Kutchi Dasha Oswal community from across the length and breadth of India joined hands and generated a sum of INR 40,00,000/- for building Sukhalay.
The construction of Sukhalay has been a boon to several elderly people of K.D.O community. For some it is like an oasis in the desert and for some it is like a support system at a time in their life when they need it the most.
The popularity of Sukhalay has resulted in an additional floor being constructed around 2017-18 to cater to the growing demand of admissions of occupants. The application for admission is scrutinized by the management committee and admission is allowed after approval from the committee. Applicants should be above 60 years and have to be pure vegetarians.
The residents of Sukhalay do not feel they are caged as they are free to visit the local temples or meet their relatives outside the premises if they wish to do so.
Donors have been generous in their contributions towards the cause of Sukhalay. Donors have come from far and wide and there are national and international donors who have donated based on their will and might.
